Superstition Stevie Wonder (#1 in 1972)

Very superstitious, writing's on the wall,
Very superstitious, ladders bout' to fall,
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin' glass
Seven years of bad luck, the good things in your past.

When you believe in things that you don't understand, then you suffer,
    Superstition ain't the way

Very superstitious, wash your face and hands,
Rid me of the problem, do all that you can,
Keep me in a daydream, keep me goin' strong,
You don't wanna save me, sad is my song.
   Chorus

Very superstitious, nothin' more to say,
Very superstitious, the devil's on his way,
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin' glass,
Seven years of bad luck, good things in your past
   Chorus

Stevie Wonder originally wrote Superstition for Jeff Beck. He was 21 at the time and free from his contract at Motown Records and under a new contract, he had full artistic control. However, Barry Gordy still had the power to name what songs would be released as singles. Even knowing that Jeff Beck was going to release Superstition, Gordy made sure that it was the lead single off Wonder's Talking Book album. By the time Beck recorded it, Wonder's version was out there. Beck was not happy and made comments to the press, which Wonder didn't appreciate. It was Stevie Wonder's first hit in 9 years, launching a new career.
