Superstar Leon Russell, Carpenters (#2 in 1971), Bette Midler

Long ago and oh so far away
I fell in love with you before the second show
Your guitar, it sounds so sweet and clear
But you're not really here
It's just the radio

Don't you remember you told me you loved me baby
You said you'd be coming back this way again baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby, I love you I really do

Loneliness is a such a sad affair
And I can hardly wait to be with you again
What to say to make you come again
Come back to me again
And play your sad guitar
    Chorus 2x

"One of the best. I'd come home during the making of our third album and was watching Johnny Carson. A relatively unknown singer was guesting. Johnny was and is a "fan" of this lady and would have her guest every now and again. Her name is Bette Midler. This was before she had reached "superstar" status.  Bette performed two songs, one was "Superstar". This was done quite a bit differently then ours would eventually be, but immediately I got very excited and tracked the tune down the following day. I couldn't wait to get into the recording studio. This recording features Karen's "work" lead, the lead she sang so the musicians could hear the tune while recording it. Karen did such a great job with it immediately that we didn't ever bother to record a master lead".  Richard Carpenter
