For All We Know The Carpenters (#3 in 1971)

Love, look at the two of us
Strangers in many ways
We've got a lifetime to share
So much to say
And as we go
From day to day
I'll feel you close to me
But time alone will tell
Let's take a lifetime to say
"I knew you well"
For only time will tell us so
And love may grow
For all we know.

"This was our fourth single release. "We've Only Just Begun" had peaked at number 1 and was starting to fall. Karen and I were concerned with what tune would become our next single. We were on the road quite a bit of the time and didn't have a great deal of time to be listening to or writing new material. At this time, we were in Toronto opening the show for Engelbert Humperdinck. Our manager suggested we take our mind of our worries and see a movie he'd seen the previous evening, "Lovers And Other Strangers". It was a great suggestion. "For All We Know" was written for this movie and Karen and I love it immediately. We thought it would make a perfect follow-up and recorded it upon returning home. It was released in December, 1970, and went on to win an Academy Award".
